WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST?
Before we can give you an idea of whether you should see a periodontist, it’s useful to talk about the field of periodontology.
A tooth is embedded into the bone and attached by tiny ligaments.
Periodontology is the study of these delicate and intricate structures.
Why would you need to see a periodontist?
The work of a periodontist includes dealing with:
+ Gum disease
+ Problems with soft tissue
+ Dental implants
+ Regenerating bone and tissue
WHEN TO SEE A PERIODONTIST?
Procedures carried out by a periodontist include deep cleaning – also known as root surface debridement – which is carried out under local anaesthesia.
Sometimes, surgery is needed to deal with gum disease.
The periodontist can make small cuts before lifting gums away from the patient’s teeth, cleaning bacteria and stitching gums back in place.
Periodontists can also use synthetic or animal-derived biomaterials to regenerate or regrow bone.
They can also place implants, deal with failing implants and supervise the growing of bone around implants.
Periodontists can also help patients with a receding gum line by performing grafts and regenerating gum.
Should I see a periodontist?
Without treatment, gum disease will likely deteriorate, the patient’s teeth can become painful and they are unfortunately more likely to lose their teeth more quickly.
