As a parent, you never stop worrying about your child’s teeth and gums.

These days it starts when they’re very little.

Longer-term breastfeeding and feeding with a bottle have both been linked to an increased risk of severe early tooth decay

Your anxiety continues as their baby teeth fall out and their adult teeth start to grow.

Concerns about whether your child has straight teeth are very common and many children in the UK have some form of orthodontic treatment.

Braces for children and teens

Tens of thousands of children under the age of 13 start orthodontic treatment, according to the British Orthodontic Society (BOS).

The BOS very simply defines orthodontic treatment as follows:

“Orthodontic treatment involves wearing braces (removable and/or fixed). It may involve the extraction of teeth and, very occasionally, jaw surgery.”

Treatment can straighten teeth, make the smile look more attractive and correct the bite.

Children’s orthodontists

We recommend your child visits our expert orthodontists no later than the age of seven because this gives us the best chance of detecting and getting to grips with potential problems.

If they’re older than seven, the sooner the better.

It’s important to spot problems early so we can try to put things right.
